Hotel Valley Ho originally opened on December 20, 1956, combining mid-century modern and Southwestern elements. Designed by prominent Valley architect Edward L. Varney, it was a beloved resting spot for travelers and Hollywood icons alike. Varney was very ahead of his time, creating plans and building substructural supports for a future seven-story tower when Scottsdale was all one- and two-story buildings.
The hotel was owned and managed by Robert Foehl and his wife Evelyn, built on the belief that “the important thing is to make your guest feel wanted.” It was the sister property to the Westward Ho in Downtown Phoenix, which helped inspire its name, chosen from a newspaper contest.
Hotel Valley Ho was acquired by Ramada in 1973, after the death of Robert Foehl, and expanded to include the neighboring Ramada Hotel (now demolished). Over the years, the hotel lost its luster as mid-century modern design went out of fashion.
In 2002, the hotel went up for sale and was redeveloped by local company Westroc Hospitality. The hotel reopened on December 20, 2005. The seven-story Tower was completed in December 2006, in the spirit of Varney’s original plans. Multiple remodels since then have kept in line with the mid-century-meets-contemporary style the hotel is famous for.
